KUALA SELANGOR (May 10, 2010): A former commando was shot after he ran amok with a knife and attacked police in Kampung Kuantan yesterday. A 22-year-old bystander was also injured in the incident after being hit by a stray bullet. Kuala Selangor police chief Supt Mohd Taib Ahmad said police went to the scene at 6.20pm after receiving a call from villagers that a man who is in his 40s and said to be an ex-soldier was running amok.
Four policemen who arrived the scene tried to coax the man, who is believed to be mentally deranged, to drop his weapon and surrender but the suspect fled, slashing a religious teacher in his hand before going into hiding at an abandoned house.
Despite repeated calls to surrender, the man refused, and instead dashed out and charged at the police with the knife.
One of the cops fired a warning shot but the suspect continued to lunge towards them. At this point, police fired three more times, hitting the suspect once in the leg and another in his abdomen.
"The policemen had spent an hour trying to persuade the man to give up but since he was armed and was becoming a threat to members of the public, the police were left with no choice but to use their handgun," Mohd Taib said, adding that the bystander, S. Surendran, approached police after they had apprehended the suspect.
Surendran, a general worker with the Public Works Department, had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest.
